Ask Dr. Cat: How Often Should You Moisturize Your Face?
If you’re part of our MD Glam family, you know I always say that moisture is the best defense against dry, dehydrated skin. But how often should you moisturize your face to optimize your skin’s complexion?
To experience the best results, you won’t want to skimp or go overboard. Twice daily is ideal. Keep reading as I reveal why moisture is vital for enhancing your skin and getting that covetable glow we all crave.
So, why moisturize?
Infusing hydration into your skin is a pivotal part of how it looks and behaves. When your skin lacks moisture, it feels tight, rough, flaky, and even itchy. It feels unpleasant, but dryness makes your skin appear less radiant. We wouldn’t want that, right ladies?
Another common misconception? Oily skin needs less moisture.
Ironically, oily skin is a common result of excessive dryness. You see, when your skin lacks hydration, it compensates by triggering your sebaceous glands into overdrive. These glands are responsible for producing more sebum (oil). The result? Clogged pores and a greasy complexion.
Bottom line: Optimizing your skin’s hydration is crucial for unveiling your most healthy, gorgeous skin. It’s also the perfect opportunity to pamper yourself and indulge in a bit of self-care.
On that note, let’s reveal how often you should moisturize your face to amplify your glow factor and give skin a little TLC.
Too much, too little, and just enough
Can you moisturize too much? I’m happy to reveal that you do not need to lather on moisturizer ten times a day to keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and radiant, otherwise, you’ll risk seeing signs of over-moisturizing your face. That said, moisturizing just once daily doesn’t quite suffice either, especially if you’re washing your face twice daily.
So what’s the perfect formula for healthy, hydrated skin? Ideally, you want to draw some hydration back into your face after each cleanse. This usually happens twice daily, about how often you should moisturize your face, too.
That said, not all moisturizers are created equal. Okay, so then, should I moisturize at night or morning?
To experience a happy, youthful complexion, you’ll want a daytime and nighttime moisturizer.
A.M. to P.M.
Knowing how often you should moisturize your face is only half the battle. The rest comes down to getting to know your skin. Part of that is understanding that your skin’s needs in the morning differ in the evening.
You need scientifically-backed ingredients that give your skin what it needs both day and night. So how are daytime and nighttime moisturizers different? It’s all in the consistency.
Your daytime moisturizer should be lightweight, make-up friendly, and protect your skin throughout the day.
I’ve fortified MD Glam’s DMAE Antioxidant Day Moisturizer with Vitamins C and E, shielding your complexion against the sun’s harsh UV rays, free radicals, and environmental toxins. This antioxidant-packed moisturizer is lightweight, fast-absorbing, and never feels greasy on the skin. It’s a holy grail primer for many makeup artists and beauty influencers (myself included).
While your morning moisturizer primes and protects, your bedtime moisturizer soothes and targets skin concerns as you savor every last second of your beauty sleep.
Referenced as our “Fountain of Youth in a jar,” MD Glam’s Hyaluronic Acid Night C-Complex is a luxurious cocktail of scientifically advanced hydrating and anti-aging ingredients. It’s also my favorite skincare product ever. I formulated this nighttime moisturizer with Vitamins A, B, C, and E so that you can experience firmness, smoothness, softening, and promote complexion-plumping collagen. Additionally, glycolic acid renews texture and illuminates skin while hyaluronic acid hydrates and heals.
To put it simply, it’s the perfect P.M. moisturizer.
